As everyone knows team owners Roush and Childress are dominating Nascar
this season. At first glance you would think that more money, better
engineers and drivers would be the reason why and that is true to some
extent. Right now you have to be asking yourself what else could it be?
Remember back when some of the prominent teams in Nascar started adding
a second car. At the time, even though Nascar was encouraging it, most
people were saying 2 car teams would not work because it was just too
expensive.
Nascar, wanting more
competitive cars at the race track every week, and realizing that there
were not a lot of new car owners stepping onto the track, knew that they
had to do something. The easiest way to get more cars every week was
to help the existing car owners afford more cars!!! Here in lies the
rub, one of the ways Nascar decided to cut team costs, was to limit the
number tracks each car could test at every year. Less testing less team
money spent equals more cars. At the time this seemed like a pretty good
idea.
Ohhhhh….but look at it
now!!!! You have 5 car teams with the ability to test on every track and
share that
information with all their crew chiefs and 1 car teams that can test on
less than half the tracks. Add to that the aero changes Nascar makes every year
which virtually eliminates last years setup numbers and what a
tremendous advantage 5 car teams have over 1 car teams. While the intent
of this rule was never meant to give one team an advantage over another,
it never the less has, and needs to be addressed.
There are a lot of ways to
correct this and Nascar should be looking at this issue right now so
that changes can be made before next season gets started. Nascar bills
themselves as the most competitive car racing in the world. I sure hope
they plan to keep it that way.
