General Tidbits

Tony Stewart is the first non-Chase driver to score multiple victories during the Chase since the programs inception in 2004. Stewart has won three of the eight Chase races this season.

Jimmie Johnson has scored four top-five finishes in the Chase, the most among all Chase drivers. All four were finishes of first or second and came in the last four races.

Jeff Burton has dropped from first to seventh in the championship standings in the last three races.

A.J. Allmendinger became the latest open-wheel defector Tuesday when the Champ Car racer signed a deal to drive for Team Red Bull in NASCAR. Allmendinger will attempt to make his Nextel Cup debut on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He received clearance from NASCAR to race on a superspeedway late Tuesday. The team also hired crew chief Rick Viers, who guided Allmendinger during his two truck races. Allmendinger finished 13th at New Hampshire and more recently, 5th at Talledega in those races. (AP)

Chevrolet clinched the 2006 Manufacturers’ Championship at New Hampshire - the 30th Manufacturers’ Championship for Chevrolet, including each of the last four years.

Michael Waltrip Racing is seeking a Travel Coordinator with previous travel experience for a race team. This individual should be comfortable with scheduling for private and commercial travel. Flexibility is a must! Please submit resume and salary requirements to: hshaw@michaelwaltrip.com or (F) 704-799-3192. EOE.(10-2-2006)

This is a quote from Carl Edwards back on May 25th of this year, “I think Harlequin and NASCAR is such a great match, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I will be appearing in an upcoming title set to launch for the 2007 racing season — I just hope they cast me as a good guy. It is very important to me to reach out to the growing number of female NASCAR fans, and this is a fun and really smart way to reach them through another one of their great loves — reading.” Shut up and drive Carl.

Tony Stewart has some ideas for the Chase. "If I could change NASCAR for a day, I would have the guys that didn't make the Chase run our own 200-mile race, then the top 10 guys could have their own 200-mile race. At least that way, you don't have teams that didn't make the playoffs playing against teams that did. The Chase is exciting; there's nothing wrong with it. It just puts some of us in some awkward positions." Tony is afraid he might wreck one of the contenders and ruin their chance for a title. Shut up and race Tony.

Chip Ganassi Racing announced that Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya will succeed the departing Casey Mears in the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge in 2007.
“As some of you may or may not know, this guy and I have had some success in the past. He called me up a few days ago and said, ‘hey, you looking for a driver?’ He said, ‘I want to drive that car.’ I said, ‘do you know which car I’m talking about?’ He said, ‘yeah, the 42.’ He said, ‘yeah, I want to drive it.’ I said, ‘OK, fine.’ The art of contact negotiation is lost on these guys.

Driver Boris Said and crew chief Frank Stoddard started No Fear Racing from scratch, leasing cars from Roush Racing in exchange for technical help. Boris helps Roush Racing by providing its drivers with road racing expertise, and Roush provides Said with cars, engines and a pit crew. Boris on his relationship with Roush Racing – “Cars: $150,000. Motors: $75,000. But the fact that he offered me his little black book with all the setups in it: That's priceless."

Teams will have a new bumper configuration for the Talladega race later this month that is intended to reduce the amount of bump drafting. While the new rule reduces the strength of the bumpers, opinion is mixed if the rule change will make a difference. The new rule forces teams to remove steel plates underneath the bumper. NASCAR wanted to maintain the bumper strength for safety but not make it so strong that drivers used it to constantly bump draft.

NBC and Dateline planted two Muslim men with hidden cameras at Martinsville this year. Hoping for a negative reaction, the staff was sorely disappointed when nobody reacted at all. It seems like they should have something better to do than manufacture news stories. NBC has stood by their shady methods and even plans to plant more Muslims at other locations.

Larry McReynolds explains the intricacies of cheating in the Nextel Cup. “In simple terms, here's the pattern. If you maliciously put something on a car that's made or machined, and it's an unapproved piece that can be confiscated, the team will be fined, the crew chief will be suspended and the driver and owner will lose 25 points. If you take something that's already on the car and use it to beat the spirit of the rule, then it warrants a suspension and a fine, but it does not warrant the loss of 25 driver and owner points.”

“To NASCAR fans everywhere, it is my distinct honor to announce that NASCAR has selected Charlotte, N.C., to be the home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. The Hall is expected to include exhibit space, a Great Hall, a Hall of Honor, interactive entertainment restaurants, retail outlets, and a state-of-the-art media center for the industry.

2/19 Daytona 500 Virtual Track

If your scared, say your scared dept. Quotes from Tony Stewart on bumpdrafting in this years Bud Shootout. “ Five years from now, we’re probably going to have to do another tribute to another driver because we’re probably going to kill somebody, it could be me, it could be Dale Jr, it could be anybody out there… It’s absolutely insane… We’re going to hurt someone really, really bad next Sunday. We’ve got to find a way to calm this thing down.”

Jimmie Johnson’s crew chief Chad Knaus was ejected from any further participation in the 2006 Daytona 500 for modifying the rear window height in Johnson’s car for Sunday’s qualifying. Johnson’s fifth place run was disallowed. The height difference was discovered during a post qualifying inspection and considered a flagrant violation and an attempt to gain a competitive advantage. (cheating)  In a related incident, Terry Labonte also had his qualifying time disallowed for illegal modifications to the carburetor. (also cheating)  Both will have to start at the back of the pack for the twin 125’s.

It would seem Dale Earnhardt Jr had a lot more fun than Tony. Dale Jr. had this to say after the Bud Shootout. “It was just all-out racing. That’s fun to me. Those last laps we were side-by-side, beatin’ and bangin’, just going for the win. It was so much fun that I forgot there was a guy in front of us. There are guys you feel comfortable racing with, and that’s just the way I feel when I’m racing around Tony. I thought we’d be able to get by Denny, but Denny did such an awesome job. He used his head, stayed patient, and remained calm. It’s not easy being in the catbird seat like that.’

Greg Biffle won at Daytona in 2003. Since then he has had a hard time with this track. With an average finish position of 26 over the last 4 races here, he is one of the big name drivers to be wary of.

Dale Earnhardt Jr has 8 top ten finishes (including 2 wins) out of his last 10 races at Daytona. He has finished in the top 5 (including 1 win) in his last 4 races here. If he doesn’t crash he will contend here.

The 48th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 19, America’s biggest and most prestigious motorsports event of the year, will once again carry the biggest purse in the history of stock car racing at more than $18 million. The winner of this year’s Daytona 500 will collect a minimum of $1,438,155. Even the last-place finisher will be rewarded with a minimum of $224,665.

Jeff Gordon leads all active drivers with 1,109 laps led in 52 restrictor-plate events. Sterling Marlin is second with 1,004 laps led in his 71 restrictor-plate races. Dale Earnhardt Jr., third, all-time, has led 770 laps in just 24 restrictor-plate races

Seventeen of the 32 Nascar Nextel Cup races at Daytona since 1990, have been won from a top-five starting position. Only seven of those races were won from outside the top 10.

Tony Stewart has scored seven top-10 finishes in 14 races at Daytona, including victory in the 2005 Pepsi 400. His best Daytona 500 finish of second came in 2004. He finished seventh in the 2005 Daytona 500.

2/26 California 500 Virtual Track
Qualifying for the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway is Friday at 6:40pm/et on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour is on Saturday at 1:35 and will be aired on FX via tape delay at 5:00pm/et

Jeff Gordon has the most wins (3) and the most top five finishes (5) of all active drivers at California Speedway.

Five of the 11 races at California Speedway have been won from staring positions of fifth or better. However four of the last five races there have been won from starting positions of 16th or worse and no one has ever won there from a front-row starting position.

Carl Edwards has a 5.0 average finish in his three races at California Speedway, the best of all drivers with two or more starts there. Edwards has finished sixth or better in all three of his races there.

There seems to be some discontent in the dodge camp. Some of the Dodge drivers are opting to use the 2004 Intrepid instead of the 2006 Charger introduced last year. All of the dodge teams are gathering data on the Charger for a test at Kentucky next month. The Charger has been the topic of controversy since it was re-introduced to NASCAR last season. Dodge owners contend the nose creates an aerodynamic disadvantage on intermediate tracks such as California. If no solution is found, Dodge owners hope NASCAR will grant them some concessions on the spoiler to create more downforce.

Dale Earnhardt Jr struggles at California Speedway. In the eight races he has competed in, he has an average finish position of 22.5 with only two top 10 finishes. “ We’re better, but not where we need to be. I’d like to be faster. We’re right in the middle of the charts at places like Fontana, Michigan and Las Vegas. Fortunately, we run good at places like Atlanta, Bristol, Phoenix – ya know, basically all the other tracks -- so we’ll be able to cover our tails until we get Vegas and California figured out.”

3/12 Las Vegas 400 Virtual Track

Qualifying for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 is scheduled for Friday at 6:40pm/et on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour is on Saturday from 1:35 – 2:20pm/et and will be shown via tape delay on FX at 5:00pm/et

With a 37th place finish last year and a 35th place finish the year before Dale Earnhardt Jr hopes his luck at Las Vegas is turning. “I think we’re on our way to getting back in the game,” said Earnhardt Jr, noting the team effort led by crew chief Tony Eury Jr. “Tony Jr. has been working real hard, and I’m working real hard to give him the best feedback I can possibly give. I know if we can get through this race, we’ll be looking pretty good. We’ve won at eight of the next nine tracks on the schedule after Vegas.”

Roush Racing has enjoyed considerable success at Las Vegas. Roush drivers have won five of the eight series events at Las Vegas, beginning with Mark Martin’s inaugural win in 1988 and followed by back-to-back wins by former Roush driver Jeff Burton (No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet) in 1999 and 2000 and Matt Kenseth’s wins in 2003 and ‘04. Hendrick Motorsports, which claims two Las Vegas wins with Johnson and Gordon, may challenge again on Sunday. Hendrick teammates Johnson, Kyle Busch and Gordon finished first, second and fourth, respectively, last season

No driver qualifying in the top five has ever won a Nextel Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Mark Martin won from seventh in 1998. Four of the last 5 races here have been won from 17th or worse starting positions. Matt Kenseth won from the worst starting position in 2004. He started 25th.

Mark Martin and Tony Stewart have each scored four top-five finishes in eight races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the most among all drivers. Martin has scored six top-10 finishes here.

Despite a 6th place finish in 2004, Elliott Sadler has never finished better than 20th at LVMS. In his seven races here he has an average finish position of 28.4. While never actually finishing dead last, he does have a 42nd place finish in 2003 and a 41st place finish in 1999

3/19 Atlanta Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Golden Corral 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway will be on Friday at 7:00pm/et and will be broadcast on the SPEED Channel. Happy Hour is Saturday from 10:35 – 11:20am/et on FX. The race is scheduled to start at 1:35pm/et on Sunday.

Tony Stewart has eight top ten finishes in the last nine races at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In those same nine races he also has four top five finishes and one win (spring 2002).

Over his career, Bobby Labonte has won at Atlanta 6 times, more than any active driver. In the last four races however, he has finished no better than 18th and has an average finish position of 26.5. His last win came in early 2003.

Starting up front may be more important than ever at Atlanta. Seven of the last eight races there have been won from a top-10 starting position. In fact, only seven of the 93 races at Atlanta have been won from outside a top-20 starting position.

Kurt Busch on Atlanta. "Our deal has been that we've always been a threat when we've been around at the finish of the race. We've been plagued with more than our share of engine problems and tire problems. Penske-built engines are known for their durability and we tested at Atlanta for Goodyear. I'm confident that we can be around for the end of this one and that we'll have us a really solid weekend at Atlanta." Kurt is currently 22nd in points and off to a slow start.

Bill Lester, the first black driver to appear in the Nextel Cup series since 1986, will attempt to qualify for the race at Atlanta. "I've been given a very significant opportunity to be a catalyst for change," he said. “For me to be front and center on the greatest stage NASCAR has will be significant. There are a lot of people of color who don't follow this sport because there's nobody they can identify with." Lester will be driving the #23 car owned by Bill Davis racing and sponsored by, of all people, Waste Management. Dale Jarrett and his UPS truck have nothing on Bill.

3/26 Bristol Virtual Track
Qualifying for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway is on Friday at 3:40pm/et on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour will be on Saturday from 11:00 – 11:50am/et and will be broadcast live on FX. The start of the race is scheduled for Sunday at 2:10 pm/et.

Only seven of the 90 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Bristol have been won from a starting position of 15th or worse. The last driver to win a race at Bristol from outside the top 15 was Dale Earnhardt Jr. who won from the 30th-place starting position in the 2004 Sharpie 500.

Mark Martin has scored 20 top ten finishes at Bristol, the most of all active drivers. He also has 8 straight top 15 finishes in the Nextel Cup series, a streak that goes back to Atlanta last October. Martin, along with Johnson, Kenseth and Kahne are the only drivers to score top fifteen finishes in all four races this year.

Matt Kenseth also has scored 7 top 10 finishes (including a win last year) in the last 8 races at Bristol.

People to be wary of at Bristol Motor Speedway include Carl Edwards (27.7 lifetime average finish position, best finish – 24th) Kasey Kahne (29.3 lifetime AFP, best finish – 21st) and Casey Mears (32.7 lifetime AFP, best finish – 21st)

Kurt Busch talks about his past success at Bristol “We tested at a short track, Lakeland, Florida. We did that back in January. That was actually our first test with the new team. Things went well there. I see the way they prepare cars and approach short track chassis is much more in detail than what I'm used to in the past. I believe that's how Rusty has had success in the past at Bristol, is the fact they build good cars. Rusty is definitely very keen on what shocks you need to run at Bristol, the different adjustments. I'm going to use that knowledge as well as what I've had there in the past. Hopefully we can definitely put together a good run to gain some points back.”

With four races completed this season, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s average finish is 12.25. Only once (2004) has Junior and the Bud team gotten off to a better start. The 2004 campaign featured two wins in the first four races (Daytona and Atlanta), giving Junior an average finish of 10.5. Dale Jr. has scored top-10 finishes in each of his last three Bristol races, starting with his victory in the 2004 Sharpie 500. In his last eight races there, he has six top-10 finishes, led 707 laps, and an average finish of 7.1.  MSulka, Paddocktalk.com

4/2 Martinsville Virtual Track
Qualifying for the DirecTV 500 at Martinsville Speedway will be on Friday at 3:40pm/et and will be aired live on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour will be on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:20am/et and will be shown live on FX. The race is scheduled to start at 2:00pm/et.

Jeff Gordon is the only active driver to have more than one win at Martinsville. Jeff has seven wins including two season sweeps, one in 2005 and another in 2003.

A Chevrolet has won five of the last six races at Martinsville. Rusty Wallace ended the Dodge 28-year drought when he won the 2004 Advance Auto Parts 500. A Ford has not won at Martinsville since Kurt Busch won the 2002 Old Dominion 500. (nascar statistical service)

Jimmy Johnson has 7 top 10 finishes (including one win) out of the last 7 races at Martinsville. Jeff Gordon has 6 top 10 finishes out of the last 6 races here, however, Jeff has 4 wins over those same six races and leads all active drivers with seven wins at Martinsville.

Carl Edwards best finish at Martinsville was 24th place in 2004. Last year he had a dismal 38th  and 26th place finish. Carl had this to say after Bristol, "It takes a lot for me to look forward to Martinsville, but this (4th place finish) sure helps. We needed a good day like this and our whole team did a great job."

Jimmy Spencer will drive the #49 Dodge Charger for BAM Racing at Martinsville Speedway this weekend. Spencer will join BAM Racing as an advisor for the team and mentor for rookie driver Brent Sherman. “I enjoy working with young drivers as they progress through the ranks of NASCAR,” said Spencer. Yes Jimmy, we all remember how you enjoyed “working” with Kurt Busch as a young driver. He ended up with a fat lip and you were suspended.

4/9 Texas Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Samsung/RadioShack 500 at Texas Motor Speedway will be on Friday at 4:40pm/et on the SPEED channel with the re-air at 10:00pm/et. Happy Hour is scheduled for Saturday from 1:05 – 1:50pm/et and will be shown via tape delay at 2:00pm/et on FX. The race on Sunday is set to start at 2:10pm/et and will be shown on FOX.

Roush fords have three wins out of the last five races at Texas Motor Speedway. Fords in general have five wins out of the last six races here. The last time a Chevy won at this track was back in 2000 with Dale Jr.

In the seven races Dale Earnhardt Jr has competed in at Texas Motor Speedway he has managed to finish in the top ten six times. He won the race here in 2000 and came in second in 2003.

Jimmie Johnson is five for five at Texas. In five races he has five top ten finishes. His best year was last year, 2005, when he had a three and, you guessed it, a five, for finishing positions. High five for Jimmie.

Robby Gordon has some trouble at Texas. His best finish was an eighteenth in 2003. His career average finish position at this track is a troubling 29.8 and last year he finished thirtyseventh.

4/22 Phoenix Virtual Track

Mark Martin has the most top five (8) and the most top ten (13) finishes of all active drivers at Phoenix International Raceway. He also is on somewhat of a streak with 11 straight top 15 finishes, extending back to the race at Atlanta last year.

Despite being a Ford track (Ford-12, Chevy-5), Chevy has won three of the last four races at Phoenix. Pontiac has two and Dodges remain winless here.

By leading at least one lap in all seven races this year Tony Stewart has scored 50 lead lap bonus points. That’s 35 more than Jimmie Johnson, the current Nextel Cup points leader, who has 15.

Looking to curb bump drafting on superspeedways, NASCAR has implemented new rules for bumpers to take effect at Talladega Superspeedway for the Aaron's 499 on April 30. Under the revised rules, the solid steel plate behind the bumper must be removed. With the new bumpers, such a tactic will result in damage likely to affect a car's aerodynamic efficiency, a vital quality at restrictor-plate tracks.

4/30 Talladega Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway will be on Saturday at 11:40am/et and will be shown on FX by tape delay at 12:00pm/et the same day. Happy Hour is Friday at 4:05pm/et on the SPEED channel. The race is scheduled to start at 2:10pm/et on Sunday.

Chevy’s have won thirteen of the last fourteen races at Talladega. Dale Jarrett brought his #88 Ford to victory lane last year to give Ford its first win since 1998. Coincidently, the # 88 and Jarrett won that race too.  The last time a Roush Ford has won at this track was back in 1997 with Mark Martin.

Out of a total of 73 races that have been run at Talladega Superspeedway, a whopping 30 of them (41%) have been won from the first or second starting position.

Aside from an occasional flash of brilliance (2nd last year and 6th in 2003) Elliott Sadler does amazingly poorly at Talladega. Out of the thirteen races he has competed in here, he has an average finish position of 26.5 and not one top fifteen finish other than those two.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has compiled quite a track record at Talladega Superspeedway, including five victories and two second-place finishes in only 12 starts. "Talladega has definitely been good for the Earnhardts. We've won five races there, and Daddy won twice as many, and it's just been a really good race track for us. I have a deep respect and understanding for the history of our sport, and Talladega is very much a part of that history.”

Nextel Cup points leader Matt Kenseth on Talladega. “Talladega is all about staying out of trouble, getting to the end, and picking the right lane at the right time. Oh yeah, and if you’re in the lead, hope there isn’t a caution with under five to go. I felt last fall we were in good shape. We were leading at the end and had everyone lined up behind us, then the caution came out and bunched everyone back together and we ended up pushing DJ (Jarrett) across for the win.

5/6 Richmond Virtual Track

The only practice for the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway will be on Friday from 11:15am to 1:15pm/et and is not scheduled to be shown on TV. Qualifying is also on Friday at 6:10pm/et on the SPEED channel and will re-air at midnight. The race should start Saturday night at 7:30pm/et on FX.

The last six races at Richmond have been won from a starting position of seventh or better and a Dodge has won three of the last five NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races here. Dodge has won three of the first nine races in 2006. Dodge only won three races in all of 2005. Chevrolet has five victories in 2006 while Ford has just one.

Tony Stewart is the only driver who has led at least one lap in all nine races in 2006 earning 60 lap leader bonus points, 40 more than point leader Jimmie Johnson who has 20.

Dale Earnhardt Jr on his day at Talladega. "We had a pretty decent car. Got loose getting into (Turn) 3 and it was four-wide and I got loose and got into Carl (Edwards) and spun myself out. I might have spun the motor backwards; that's probably why I blew up. We don't normally have engine failures. But right there just now, it just blew up and quit running. It was a tough day for us, but oh well." Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.

Greg Biffle has the longest current streak at Richmond International Raceway with 3 top ten finishes in the last 3 races. Robby Gordon, on the other hand, has had his problems here. His average finish position at Richmond is a dismal 28th and his best finish in the last five races is 24th. Robby just don’t go at Richmond.

5/13 Darlington Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Dodge Charger 500 at Darlington Raceway is scheduled for Friday at 3:30pm/et on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour is set for later Friday at 6:30 also on the SPEED channel. The race is set to start at 6:55pm/et on Saturday.

Jeff Gordon who has six wins, 13 top fives, and 16 top tens in 25 races at Darlington talks some strategy. “The tires wear out quick, so it requires a lot more finesse and patience than we use at most tracks we go to. You just have to be careful not to push too hard because the car is slipping and sliding at all times. We run so close to the wall every single lap that one slip could ruin your night. It’s all about staying out of the wall.”

Out of 22 races at Darlington, Jeremy Mayfield has seven top 10 finishes. Of those seven- six were sixth or better; but never a first place finish.

The worst starting position to ever win at Darlington was in the inaugural Southern 500 in 1950 by Johnny Mantz, when he started the day at 43rd out of a 75 car field.

Dale Jarrett was the last driver to win Darlington from the pole when he won the 1997 Transouth Financial 500 17 races ago.

Jimmie Johnson has six top 10 finishes ( with two of those being wins in 2004) out of  seven races at Darlington

Kevin Lepage has left the No. 61 Front Row Motorsports Ford team and will be driving the BAM Racing No. 49 Dodge at Darlington. Lepage took crew chief Greg Conner with him. Lepage replaces rookie Brent Sherman, who left the team last week.

5/28 Lowe's Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway is scheduled for Thursday at 7pm/et on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour will be Saturday at 6:30pm/et on FX. The race is set to start Sunday at 5:40pm/et and will be shown on Fox.

Jimmie Johnson has won the last four races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. No driver in NASCAR history has won five straight races at a superspeedway. Car owner Rick Hendrick has scored 13 wins at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the most of any car owner. Hendrick’s victories were scored by six different drivers: Jimmie Johnson (five), Jeff Gordon (four), Darrell Waltrip (two), Terry Labonte (one) and Ken Schrader (one).

Mark Martin leads all active, full time drivers with 16 top five and 20 top ten finishes at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. In the last 16 races here he has managed a 11.3 average finish position with two wins.

Joe Nemechek is looking forward to this weekend’s race at LMS. "When you compete in the U.S. Army car on Memorial Day weekend, the adrenalin flows faster and you carry additional pride," said Nemechek. "We came close to victory last year at this race and we will be just as aggressive this time around." Joe was fourth last year and has an average finish position of 10.3 over the last four races here.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Lowe's Motor Speedway has been won from the pole, from the second starting position and from the third starting position 13 times each. Fourth has produced seven winners; and fifth eight for a total of 54 victories in 94 races from the top-five starting positions (57 percent).

Jeff Gordon has won four races at Lowe's Motor Speedway. His last win came there in October 1999, 13 Lowe's races ago. Gordon's last victory came at Martinsville in October 2005, 16 races ago - his only victory in the last 38 races.

6/4 Dover Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Neighborhood Excellence 400 at Dover International Speedway will be at 3:10pm/et on Friday and will be shown via tape delay at 5:30pm/et on SPEED. Happy Hour is set for Saturday at 10:35am/et and will be shown via tape delay at 2:00pm/et on FX. The green flag is scheduled to drop at 2:10pm/et and the race will be shown live.

Ryan Newman has scored seven top-10 finishes in his eight races at Dover. Three of those finishes were victories. His last Dover victory came in September 2004.

Tony Stewart has won two races at Dover. His 6.0 average finish there is the best among active drivers with more than two starts there. Stewart has scored 11 top-10 finishes in his 14 races at Dover. Despite his great record at Dover, he finished 15th and 18th there in 2005, his worst season at Dover since he first raced there in 1999.

Dale Earnhardt Jr talks about his past experiences at Dover. “We’ve never been consistent at Dover, but we’ve won there, so there’s always that small piece of confidence in the back of your mind that we can do it again. I’m looking forward to going back with Tony Jr. and seeing how much better we can be. We seem to improve each week, so I like the direction we’re heading, and hopefully we can keep it rolling.

Dover hosted the first Cup race held after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Dale Earnhardt Jr. got the win that day and took a giant American flag on a victory lap.

Veteran NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd has been secured by Joe Gibbs Racing to serve as the relief driver for the No. 20 team this weekend at Dover. Rudd, a winner of 23 Nextel Cup races - four of which came at Dover - will practice and qualify the No. 20 Chevrolet while Stewart will start the 400-lap race. Rudd will be on standby in the pit area to relieve Stewart at any point during the event. By starting at Dover, Stewart will receive all points toward the Nextel Cup driver's championship.

Kasey Kahne does not fair well at Dover International Speedway. In the four races he has driven in here, he has an average finish position of 28.5. He did finish 16th last year, his best finish at Dover

Mark Martin has the longest top five streak of all active drivers at Dover. Starting with the spring race in 2004, Martin has scored 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place consecutive finishes. In the last 16 races here he has an average finish position of 11.8 including three wins. On top of that, Mark has been known to do well at the short tracks.

6/11 Pocono Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway will be on Friday at 3:40pm/et and will be shown live on the SPEED channel. Jeff Burton has climbed from 21st to 7th in the point standings since Martinsville. In those seven races he scored six top-10 finishes and all seven were top-15s. One year ago he ranked 16th

Five of the last seven races at Pocono Raceway have been won from a top-five starting position. Only four races at Pocono Raceway have been won from a starting position below 16th.

Jack Roush Racing won both races at Pocono in 2005 (Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch). Carl Edwards started 29th and went on to victory - the furthest back a race winner has started in the 56 races at Pocono. Hendrick Motorsports won both Pocono races in 2004 (both by Jimmie Johnson).

Mark Martin leads all drivers scoring 19 top-five and 27 top-10 finishes at Pocono, the most among all drivers in Pocono history.

Jeff Gordon ranks first all-time in laps led at Pocono, leading 841 laps in 26 races there. Geoffrey Bodine follows in second with 806 laps in 39 races at Pocono.

Kasey Kahne on Pocono. “The key at Pocono is finding a setup that makes the racecar competitive in all three corners. It’s the total lap and not just one turn. We will be spending every minute of practice adjusting on the No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger finding that setup. Pocono is not the toughest track on you physically for strength. Going down those long straightaways, the air doesn’t usually leave the car. You get real hot. It’s a long 500-mile race.”

6/18 Michigan Virtual Track

Qualifying for the 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway will be on Friday at 3:10pm/et and will be shown live on the Speed channel. Happy Hour is scheduled for Saturday at 10:35am/et and will be shown on FX via tape delay at 6:30pm/et. The race is set to start at 1:40pm/et.

A Dodge has won three of the last five races at Michigan. A Ford has won five of the last eight races at Michigan. A Chevrolet has not won at Michigan since June 2001 (Jeff Gordon), 10 Michigan races ago.

Matt Kenseth has scored top-10 finishes in his last six races at Michigan, the longest current streak among active drivers. Greg Biffle, Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards have each scored three straight top 10 finishes here.

Elliott Sadler has only two top ten finishes in 14 races at Michigan. His average finish position for those 14 races is 24. Last year he came in 39th.

Although Bill Lester has not made a NEXTEL Cup start on the two-mile Brooklyn, Mich., track, he has been successful at the venue in the Craftsman Truck Series. Since his first start at MIS in 2002, Lester has posted a pair of top-five qualifying efforts. He has an average finish of 15th, has never finished outside the top 18 and has completed all of the laps in the races in which he has competed.

In his last five starts at Michigan, Jeff Gordon has posted only one top-10 finish. “We ran well here in 2004, and we led a lot of laps in the June event that year before we had engine problems,” Gordon said. “Last year, though, we struggled and that is what we have to improve upon.”

Jeff Burton has climbed from 21st to 7th in the point standings since Martinsville. In those eight races he scored seven top-10 finishes and all eight were top-15s. One year ago he ranked 16th.

6/25 Infineon Virtual Track

Qualifying for the Dodge/Savemart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma California will be on Friday at 7:00pm/et and will be shown live on the SPEED channel. Happy Hour is set for Saturday at 2:10pm/et on FX. The race is scheduled to start at 5:40pm/et and will be on FOX.

Jimmie Johnson has some better advice on the race at Infineon. “There are only a couple chances to really pass someone if they are competitive and running fast speeds so it is really frustrating trying to set someone up for an entire lap to pass in turn 11. Obviously the guy in front of you knows what is coming and he is defending it and blocking it. Your frustration gets pretty high at that race track so remaining calm and relaxed and not making mistakes on your own behalf is really the suggestion I would give to a rookie coming in.”

A Dodge has never won a race at Infineon Raceway or at Watkins Glen International. The last road-course victory in a Dodge was when Richard Petty won the NAPA Riverside 400 at Riverside (CA) in June 1977.

Tony Stewart has an 8.0 average finish position in his seven races at Infineon Raceway, the best of all drivers.

Jamie McMurry states the obvious about Infineon. “Qualifying is big here. We will look for a decent qualifying effort so we can get our Crown Royal Fusion out front early. We’ve finished in the top 20 each time out in Sonoma and have completed every lap of each race.” In the last 10 Nextel Cup races held here, the worst starting position to win was 7th. The pole position has won 4 times. Road courses are all about track position.

Jeff Gordon has led 393 laps in 13 races at Infineon Raceway, the most of all drivers. Retired driver Rusty Wallace ranks second leading 171 laps in 17 races. Mark Martin ranks third with 161 laps led in 17 races at Infineon Raceway.

Terry Labonte and Michael Waltrip share the track record at Infineon for the biggest improvement from qualifying to finish at 36 positions. In 2002, Labonte started 39th and finished in 3rd place. Waltrip started 40th and finished 4th in 2004.

Greg Biffle climbed from 23rd to ninth in the last seven races and is just 19 points behind eighth-place Jeff Gordon, however, in his seven career races at Daytona, Biffle has only one top ten finish, a win in the 2003 Pepsi 400 when Bobby Labonte ran out of gas on the last lap. With an average finish position of 22.4 you might say Greg struggles at Daytona.

Dale Earnhardt Jr has six straight top-10 finishes at Daytona, the longest current streak. Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart have each posted five straight top-10 finishes at Daytona International Speedway.

The last five races at Daytona International Speedway have been won from a starting position of 15th or better and only nine of the 118 races at Daytona were won from outside a top-15 starting position (7.6 percent)

The Wood Brothers have won 14 races at Daytona, the most of any car owner. The Petty’s are the only other owner to post double digits victories at Daytona with 11. The Wood Brothers last Daytona victory came there in 1983 when Buddy Baker won the 1983 Firecracker 400, 23 years ago.

A Dodge has won only one race in the last 57 races at Daytona. Ward Burton scored the first Dodge victory at Daytona since Richard Petty won the 1975 Daytona 500, when he won the 2002 Daytona 500. A Chevrolet has won the last five races at Daytona and seven of the last eight. A Ford has won only one race in the last 11 races at Daytona.

A Chevrolet has won four of the five races at Chicagoland Speedway. A Dodge won there in 2003. A Ford has never won at Chicagoland Speedway.

Both Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart have 4 top five finishes in the last 4 races at Chicagoland. Tony also has a win here in 2004 and has led the most laps (275) of all drivers.

Three of the five races at Chicagoland Speedway have been won from a starting position outside the top-10 and no Nascar Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland has ever been won from a top-five starting position.

There are four current race tracks the Nextel Cup Series runs on that #24-Jeff Gordon has not won at, Texas 0 for 11 with a best of 2nd in 2002, Phoenix International Raceway 0 for 15 with a best of 3rd in 2002 and 2004; Chicago 0 for 5 with a 2nd in 2003 being his best; Homestead 0 for 7 with a best finish of 3rd 2004.

7/16 New Hampshire Virtual Track

Happy Hour practice for the Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway is on Saturday at 10:00pm/et and will be shown live on the SPEED channel. A Ford, Chevrolet and a Dodge have each scored a victory in the last three races at New Hampshire. Ford has the most wins here with ten. Chevy is second with eight and Dodge has two.

Jeff Burton has four wins in his career at NHIS, the most of any active driver. Jeff Gordon has the most top five finishes here with nine and Dale Jarrett has the most top ten finishes with fourteen.

Mark Martin, who is expected to make his 600th consecutive NASCAR NEXTEL Cup start at New Hampshire, had this to say about NHIS.

"Loudon can be a really tough race track. It can be really hard to pass there and if you don't handle well, then you are in for a long day, but we are optimistic about this weekend. We are taking the same car and set up that we used at Phoenix, where we had what was probably the fastest car in the field and what was one of the fastest cars I've had in a long time.” Mark finished 7th the last time he raced here.

Jeff Gordon has competed in all 22 races at New Hampshire International Speedway. He has led 1,069 laps in those races, the most of all drivers. Tony Stewart has led 736 laps in 14 races there and ranks second.

Ryan Newman has seven top 10 (including five top 5 and two wins) out of eight races at NHIS. This gives him a career average finish position of 7.9, the best of all active drivers. Matt Kenseth has seven straight top 10 finishes but no wins to give him an average finish position of 9.9.

Jeremy Mayfield has only one top 10 finish in his last ten races at NHIS. With a career average finish position of 24.6 he should probably be avoided here.

Jeff Burton led all 300 laps of the September 2000 race at NHIS, only the third time in Nextel Cup history a driver has led all the laps in one race. Ironically, he also holds the record for leading the fewest laps by a race winner here, two, which happened in July 1999.

Three of the last four races at New Hampshire have been won from outside the top-10 starting positions.

Boris Said will attempt to qualify for the Brickyard 400 on Saturday, looks as if his “sell more cases, do more races” line is working for the Sobe/No Fear team.

Three of the last five races at Indy have been won from outside the top-10 starting positions. Only two of the 12 previous races at Indy have been won from the front row.

Elliott Sadler struggles at Indy. His average finish over the last seven races is 27th. His best finish was 3rd, in 2004.
